FOOTBALL MS ABDB victorious in FA Cup opener

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

MS ABDB opened their Brunei FA Cup campaign with a win against non-league team AKSE Bersatu at the Balapan, Track and Field in Berakas last night.

Mohammad Haizul Rani Metussin, Mohammad Mazazizi Mazlan, Mohammad Zairol Kamat and Mohammad Hardi Matassan all found the net for the victors in the 4-1 win.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, MS ABDB assistant manager Khalid Hj Bujang was not happy with the team's performance.

"It was not the game that we were hoping for and it was a very dull game. We created a lot of chances in the game, especially in the second half, but we could not score and it is very disappointing," he said.

"We will face Rimba Star in the next round. They are a good team, we played them in the league (DST National Football League) in which we won 4-0 but it is going to be a tough game for us," he added.

The match started brightly with both teams focused on offence. As the game went on, MS ABDB began to dominate play and midfield possession.

Mohammad Haizul Rani eventually broke the deadlock to give the Army men a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

Mohammad Mazazizi Mazlan added the second in the 31st minute via a penalty, beating AKSE Bersatu goalkeeper Hasbullah Abdullah before Mohammad Zairol added the third seven minutes later to give the army men a 3-0 lead heading into the locker room.

The game continued in similar fashion in the second half. MS ABDB were dominating the midfield and created a lot of chances, only to be let down by their poor finishing.

AKSE Bersatu's Daud Hj Nasir's 74th minute solo effort saw him claw one goal back for his team but MS ABDB would restore their three-goal cushion 10 minutes later with a Mohammad Hardi strike after a rebound from a teammate's attempt.

The tournament resumes today with another non-league side, SMKERZ FC, facing Tunas FC at the Berakas Sports Complex at 8:15pm.The Brunei Times
