THE Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) survived a late
scare to hold on to a 2-1 win against Brunei Darussalam Schools' Sports
Council (MSSSBD) during last night's Brunei Games football tournament.
Though the defending champions were 2-0 up after only eight minutes, their younger opponents gave them a run for their money in the second half and had numerous chances to bag a deserved equaliser at the Balapan Track & Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
But MS PDB, who beat the Royal Brunei Armed Forces' Sports Council (MS ABDB) 5-4 on penalties to take the 2010 edition of the tournament, shored up their defence and rode out the win.
"This is the same team that plays in the DST National Football League so the experience is there," noted MS PDB coach Sahrin Mohamad Jaya.
"Our target was to get a goal inside the first 15 minutes and then settle down and defend.
"We face Institutes of Higher Learning (Institut Pengajian Tinggi/ IPT) in our next game on Tuesday and to win we have to improve in midfield.
"We're the defending champions so of course the aim is to retain our crown," he added when asked of the team's target in the competition.
Khalid Mustapa put the titleholders ahead in the fifth minute after being the first to react to a spilt free-kick by MSSSBD goalkeeper Ahmad Zawawi Pengarah Hj Ibrahim, and MS PDB captain Mohd Syarafuddin Hamdi Hj Talip would convert a cross to make it 2-0 three minutes later.
MSSSBD dominated the second half, and after waves of attack, went in front after Abdul Kahir Hj Basri scored from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.
But though they had their chances in front of goal, a mixture of inexperience and nerves meant a second goal never materialised.
MSSSBD's best chance fell to Abd Azim Abd Rashid, who after being put through on goal, failed to test goalkeeper Ak Mohd Muizzuddin Pg Ismail from inside the box with a shot that skidded wide of the left post.
"We played better in the second half but this is their first real game together so it was not easy," conceded MSSSBD coach Liew Chuan Fue.
"The two early goals really got to them.
"This team was formed in March to compete in next month's Under-18 Asian Schools Football Tournament in Iran so this game, and competition, is good experience for them," added the former national skipper.
Brunei-Muara beat IPT 2-1 in last night's other game at the Berakas Sports Complex.
Tonight's games will see MS ABDB take on Tutong at the Berakas Sports Complex and Temburong face Royal Brunei Airlines at the Balapan Track & Field, both matches set to start at 8pm.
