THE Brunei-Muara District may get a football league of its own in the near future.
The Brunei Muara District Football Association (PBDBM) yesterday revealed plans to host a proper league for clubs based in the Brunei-Muara District next year.
PBDBM Secretary General Hj Mohd Noor Hj Hamid (pic) told The Brunei Times that the association has invited seven teams for a round robin league which will start next Friday as a trial run to give the association an idea of what will have to be done in preparation for the league.
He said that the association needs to survey and consult with other clubs and teams in the district before starting the league.
Hj Mohd Noor stressed that the association must make sure the teams are committed to playing in the league and that the teams are prepared in terms of their resource management.
"We have observed in other local leagues that teams are formed but important necessities were missing... such as not having enough players or that the team does not have complete uniforms, the quantity is there but the quality is also needed," said the secretary general.
Hj Mohd Noor added that ensuring these attributes would also help the teams raise their standard of football.
"The teams can develop themselves in the long run... the district league could help them grow further when participating in other leagues," he said.
A team managers meeting for the seven participating teams will be held at 7.50am tomorrow at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.
According to the press statement, team managers who fail to attend the meeting would have their team pulled out of the competition. The seven teams are MIISA United FC, Besa FC, Pengkalan Batu, Seri Wira, PITA, Rimba Star and Pancur Murai FC.
The first league match would be held at 3pm next Friday at the Menglait Sports Complex football field.
PBDBM has yet to announce which teams would play in the opener. It also reported that matches would be played every Friday and Sunday.
