A 93RD minute goal by Mohammad Safari Wahit earned Royal Brunei Armed
Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) a valuable three points against Wijaya
FC in the DST Super League at the Balapan Track and Field at the
Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas yesterday.
The centre-back headed in Budiman Jumat's cross to snatch the win which sees MS ABDB level on six points with new leaders Jerudong FC and second-placed Liang Lumut Recreational Club Football Team (LLRC FT) and only behind on goal difference.
Jerudong FC replaced LLRC FT at the top of the table after being held to a 3-3 draw by Kilanas FC at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas last night.
Yet while MS ABDB manager Azaman Hj Hussin was all smiles after his team late winner, he was not so happy with Wijaya FC defensive approach of the game.
"Alhamdulillah, we won the game. Credit to the players, they keep on trying and they finally got their goal late in the second-half. I think my players did very well in the game, it was just Wijaya FC played very defensively today and it was very difficult for us.
"They are playing with five defenders at the back and put nine players in front of their goal when we attack," said the manager in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
"We realised that we need to make some changes in the second-half. So we decided to change the formation from 4-5-1 to 3-4-3 to add power to the attack. I think our defenders did a great job today, especially captain Affendy Hj Akup... he controlled the backline very well in the game," he added.
Wijaya FC started the game brightly in the first-half and Abd Hakim Mohd Musliano should have put them in front five minutes into the game but the striker fired wide following a punch from MS ABDB goalkeeper Mohd Suhandi Hj Awg Mahali.
However, MS ABDB gradually came into the match and had the opportunity to score in the 31st minutes when Mohammad Mazazizi Mazlan's clever pass found Mohd Khairul Mee Mail in space and the midfielder lashed his shot just wide.
The armymen threatened again moments later when Aliuddin Hj Besar surged through on goal, only for Wijaya FC's goalkeeper Mohd Nashruddin Selamat to race off his line and bravely smothered the striker's effort.
Wijaya FC were playing with 10 men behind the ball in the second-half and the armymen were trying to break them down and Budiman, who has already two goals to his name for MS ABDB, wasted a good chance few minutes after the restart.
The striker perfectly latched onto Mohammad Mazazizi's through ball, then turned and shot just wide of the far post.
The only time Wijaya FC's came close to scoring in the second-half was when Abang Muhd Fakhri Abg Jaludin made a dynamic run into the MS ABDB penalty area and forced Muhammad Suhandi into an agile save in the closing minute.
