A HAT-TRICK from SLD Budiman Jumat helped power the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) to a 5-1 victory over Kilanas FC in a DST Super League match last night.
The result in what is the league's second-last round of action means that MS ABDB remain on top of the table while Kilanas finish second last.
Najip are set to end the season at the bottom of the 10-team table after losing last night's game 7-0 to Wijaya FC and are the only side yet to pick up a point.
Wijaya, though, will finish this year's campaign on eighth after displacing Jerudong with the win.
It took less than a minute for SLD Budiman to score his first goal after meeting a cross to finish into the net at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Kilanas FC replied through Mohd Nor Hidayatullah Hj Zaini in the 24th minute after he latched on a through pass to finish cooly past the MS ABDB goalkeeper.
SLD Md Hazmi Zolkipli broke the deadlock six minutes later by slotting the ball low past the Kilanas goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
MS ABDB's SLD Budiman bagged his second goal after directing a chip into goal two minutes after the break and he completed his hat-trick with a curling shot from 25 yards out to beat the goalkeeper after the Kilanas defensive line failed to mark him.
MS ABDB's LKPL Ak Mohd Safri Pg Hj Othman piled on more misery for Kilanas in the 77th minute with a simple finish into the net from a cross.
In contrast to the scoreline, Kilanas looked more convincing in the first half as they bossed the midfield who were constantly supplying passes to their speedy wingers.
On the other hand, MS ABDB looked lethargic and missed a few scoring chances which could have further extended the lead early on.
It was only in the second half that MS ABDB truly showed why they are at the top of the table.
Compared to their opponents, MS ABDB were lacking in pace but they had players who were physically able to turn defense into counter-attack.
Kilanas became increasingly fatigued towards the end of the game and often failed to properly mark the marauding MS ABDB players.
After the game, MS ABDB manager Major Azaman Hj Hussin said that the team deliberately rested some key players ahead Sunday's potentially title-deciding clash against second-placed Indera Sports Club, but this resulted in a lacklustre first half performance.
"We had to put in a few of our experienced players to widen the scores because we want to increase our goal difference as much as possible," he told The Brunei Times.
"Making those changes was the right thing to do and it was definitely easier for us to score more goals in the second half," said Major Azaman.
