THE Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) grinded out a 1-0 victory over IKLS FC in the DST Super League season opener last night.

Hj Khairil Roisanykhan Hj Isakhan netted the only goal in the second half to separate the two sides at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

It was an even opening half and IKLS, who were promoted from the DST Premier League after finishing second last season, could have got in front on the half hour mark.

Ak Mohd Wafri Pg Mohd Jefri fired from inside the box but MS PDB goalkeeper Pg Mohd Muizzuddin Pg Ismail produced a good save.

MS PDB got their chances and had the ball cleared off the line twice four minutes later.

The policemen almost broke the deadlock in the 37th minute after IKLS custodian Mohammad Hafiz Ikhwan Hasmali misjudged a free-kick from the midway line.

The ball slipped past his hands but he was fortunate to watch it bounce off the wrong side of the right post.
IKLS got another opportunity in the 39th minute after Ak Ammar Syafie Pg Hassanudin got a free header inside the box, only to watch it float over the bar.

MS PDB came out more focused and were keeping better ball possession after the interval.

They got forward in the 53rd minute off a counter attack but Mohd Faiq Ramlee put his shot from 30 yards out just over.

MS PDB finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute after a 35-yard freekick by Hj Khairil Roisanykhan took a deflection at the near post and into goal.

The lead should have been doubled just five minutes later after Hj Khairil Roisanykhan broke down the right and put the ball down the middle.

However, Mohd Bohari Mohammad Hasan somehow blasted it over from close range.

IKLS were using the long ball to get past the policemen’s defence but they couldn’t seem to finish.
Their final chance came four minutes into injury time with a free-kick from 30 yards out but Mohd Amirul Muhamad Rasyid could only fire it straight to the Pg Mohd Muizzuddin.

MS PDB head coach S/Sgt Sahrin Md Jaya was relieved to get all three points from the encounter.
“We were lucky to get that goal. We created a lot of chances but just couldn’t score,” said Sahrin in an interview with The Brunei Times after the win.

“We still need to brush up on our finishing as well as improve on our fitness,” he added.

The competition continues tomorrow with Najip FC going up against Kilanas FC at the Tutong Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, the clash of the titans between two-time defending champions Indera SC and two-time runners-up Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) which was set for Sunday has been postponed.

Lun Bawang, who are this season’s other new boys after finishing last year’s DST Premier League campaign undefeated enroute to the title, kick off their DST Super League involvement on April 18 against - coincidentally - MS PDB.
