ROYAL Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) cruised to a 3-0 victory over QAF FC at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas last night.

The win propelled the armymen to second in the league with 12 points, ahead of Najip FC on goal difference.

QAF remain fifth in the 10-team table with eight points.

“Great performance by the team today, all the players contributed in the win and it was a very good win for us,” said MS ABDB manager Pg Muhd Mufid Pg Umar Ariffin in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match.

“We are now second in the table and the title is wide open for the teams in the top five.

“We played very (offensive minded) football, especially in the first-half tonight. The plan was to get early goals… and in the second-half we balanced the play by not committing too much in the attack and strengthening the defence.

“Our goalkeeper made a number of wonderful saves in the game and he was our best player tonight,” said the manager.

Ak Mohd Safri Pg Othman almost put MS ABDB in front five minutes into the game when he was given plenty of space just outside the penalty box, but he lashed his shot wide.

Sam Frank partnered Mohd Adie Arsham Mohd Salleh up front for QAF FC, while winger Muhd Hafis Mahari also assisted in the attack.

Mohd Baharin Hamidon put MS ABDB ahead in the 16th minute with a beautiful curling shot from the edge of the penalty box to beat QAF goalkeeper Junaidi Akim.

Midfielders Mardi Mirza Abdullah Bujang and twin brother Hardi were quiet in the first 20 minutes in the middle of the field with MS ABDB pushing the ball to both flanks using their wingers to create chances.

Mardi Mirza's clever play at the hour mark set Muhd Hafis through into the penalty box, but the 23-year-old saw his weak attempt fly straight into the hands of MS ABDB goalkeeper Mohd Suhandi Hj Awg Mahali.

Former DPMM FC defender Suhaimi Hj Mohd Yussof rattled the bar a minute later with a stunning volley following a corner kick from the right.

MS ABDB caught QAF FC defenders napping and scored two goals in a space of just two minutes.
Mohammad Mohaimeen Rosmalee found the back of the net in the 32nd minute, the 17-year-old rounding the goalkeeper before blasting the ball home.

Budiman Jumat then smashed home MS ABDB’s third goal of the night a minute later from close range in a swift counter attack.

Frank could have scored the best goal in the league so far when he hit his volley from almost half the length of the field but his effort went just a few inches wide.

MS ABDB continued to dominate after the restart keeping possession and they were clearly the better team throughout the remainder of the match.

The other match last night saw Wijaya FC defeated Kilanas FC 4-2 at the Berakas Sports Complex.
