Wijaya set sights on podium finish

WIJAYA FC have underlined their ambition of attaining a top three finish in the Brunei DST Super League this season following their victory against Jerudong FC at the Berakas Sports Complex.
Wijaya, one of the longest serving clubs in Brunei’s top tier league, finished fourth 5 points off the pace behind Najip I Team last year but carry expectations of going one better or more with Indera SC and MS ABDB likely to duel for the league title again.
The one-time league winner when it was known as the B League in its old format in 2003 have also indicated that winning the league would have been a bonus.
The team has matched their ambition after signing Suhaimi Anak Sulau from Tabuan Muda, who was a member of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy two years ago.
Wijaya’s loss to defending champions MS ABDB in the opening day of the season stirred a response among the players to outperform their next opponents.
“After we lost to MS ABDB we trained hard. Each game we try to improve to show we can do it,” said Wijaya assistant manager Muhammad Hilmi Hazwan bin Zakaria.
Wijaya has hailed the good signing of Suhaimi who can operate as a defensive full back as fundamental to their top three hopes.
“Suhaimi blend in with his team-mates during training. He shows a very good performance in the past couple of games,” added Hilmi.
He added that the arrival of Abd Azim Abd Rasid represents a valuable asset to the team which qualities lies as a lethal striker.
“He is very good. We try to get him confidence in the pitch after he was held back from injury last year.”
The team, who has set a target in the top three on an annual basis, also boasts new faces from the Brunei DST Premier League.
“We have a talented coach in place and every day we need to show that we can do it,” he concluded.
