CPL MOHD Hardi Hj Matassan's hat-trick put the Royal Brunei Armed
Forces' Sports Council (MS ABDB) on their way to a 5-0 win over Tutong
during last night's Brunei Games football competition.
The striker opened the scoring in the 39th minute and a quick-fire brace in the 62nd and 65th minute gave last edition's runners-up just the kind of start they were looking for in their tournament opener, with a brace from L/Cpl Mohd Hazmin Hj Mohamed (79th and 84th minute) sealing the win at the Berakas Sports Complex.
"Mohd Hardi is a senior player and has quality finishing," said MS ABDB's coach Sgt Mohd Saifulrizal Awang of last night's star.
"We didn't really play our game in the first half, so I put more midfielders (five) in the second half and the changes really worked.
"I'm satisfied with the result since we've got three points, but we will have to continue improving and will only know our true capabilities when we face stronger teams like Belait," added the coach.
MS ABDB were forced to settle for silver during the 2010 edition when they lost the final 5-4 on penalties to the Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PBD), and looking at last night's performance, Sgt Mohd Saifulrizal insists a place in the final should be no problem.
"Of course I think we can make it to the final," said the coach when asked whether his side were capable of another run to the championship match.
"Our target is gold, especially since we lost the last time around," he added.
Temburong edged Royal Brunei Airlines 4-3 in last night's other match at the Balapan Track & Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas, the team filled with QAF FC players putting their tournament back on track after opening with a 6-2 loss to Belait on Saturday.
MS PBD will face Institutes of Higher Learning (Institut Pengajian Tinggi/ IPT) in tonight's match at the Berakas Sports Complex knowing that another win will see them with one foot in the semi-finals. The policemen beat Brunei Darussalam Schools' Sports Council (MSSSBD) 2-1 in both teams' first match on Sunday.
MSSSBD, who were only formed in March with the view of competing in next month's Under-18 Asian Schools Football Tournament in Iran, face Belait at the Balapan Track & Field.
Both games are scheduled for an 8pm kick-off.
