KILANAS are fully aware of the threat Royal Brunei Police Forces Sports Council (MS PDB) can pose in their Brunei FA Cup 2012 quarter-final clash tonight at 8 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

One of the strongest team in the tournament, MS PDB are a side that not many would like to go up against.

But talking to Kilanas FC assistant coach Muhammad Radzuan Hj Madali, it is clear that he feels Kilanas FC are ready for the game.

"For the past few weeks, we have been focusing on the fitness training. The players are all ready. There are no injuries and the squad is in a good spirit," said the coach.

"The players are looking forward to playing against MS PDB tomorrow," he told The Brunei Times last night.

"However at the same time we are fully aware that MS PDB is a very strong team. Their players are very quick and they are very fit too. It is going to be a very interesting match tomorrow. We are looking forward to it."

Kilanas FC defeated BESA FC 5-1 in the third-round match of the tournament at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas in October.

Mohamed Azmi Hj Zainin, Syazwan Azizi Hj Mohd Taib, Mohd Nor Hidayatullah Hj Zaini,Mohd Khairul Hj Abd Halim and Naasiruddeen Abdul Wahab all found the net for Kilanas FC.

Meanwhile, MS PDB coach Sahrin Hj Mohammad Jaya has warned his players not to be overconfident when they face Kilanas FC tomorrow.

"We do not know much about Kilanas FC. But I told my players not to be overconfident and just play our usual game. Lately we have been focusing on our set-piece training. We will see how it goes tomorrow," he said.

MS PDB defeated Muara Vella 3-1 in the third-round match of the tournament at the Berakas Sports Complex on November 8.

Rosmini Abdul Kahar, Khalid Mustapah and Mohd Hisam Azam scored for MS PDB in the game.

Indera SC prevail over LLRC FT to secure semi-final berth

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

INDERA SC are through to the semi-final of the Brunei FA Cup after defeating Liang Lumut Recreation Club (LLRC) FT 5-3 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas last night.

They will face the winner between the Royal Brunei Police Forces Sport Council (MS PDB) and Kilanas FC, the two teams doing battle in the last quarter-final tie on Friday.

Indera SC opened the scoring early in the game when Hamizan Aziz Sulaiman scored from the near post after he was found unmarked following the corner-kick in the 10th minute.

Indera SC's Mohammad Azwan Ali Rahman, who featured in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup qualifier in Myanmar, should have made it 2-0 in the 17th minute when he was set up by Hamizan's cross from the right but sent a glancing header wide.

He then latched onto a great pass by Hamizan three minutes later but fired his initial shot at LLRC FT goalkeeper Firman Taufik Nugraha before scooping the rebound over the bar.

Safuan Juhar made it 1-1 in the 27th minute after the referee awarded LLRC FT a penalty for a handball.

Safuan then made it 2-1 seven minutes later when he beautifully latched onto a Muhd Shah Hafiz Kifli through pass before calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper in a thrilling first-half.

The second-half was even more thrilling when Indera SC's Mohammad Azwan equalised in the 54th minute.

He made no mistake this time when he beat two defenders with a diagonal run before slamming a right-footed shot past LLRC FT goalkeeper Firman.

However, LLRC FT responded immediately when Muhd Shah Hafiz's 30m drive defeated Indera SC goalkeeper Ak Omar Nur Aqammadin Pg Hj Salehuddin in the 56th minute.

Substitute Muhammad Nazirul Nazreen Abdullah made it 3-3 in the 80th minute before Mohammad Khayrun Salleh and Mohammad Azwan scored in the 87th and 90th minutes, respectively to make it 5-3 to Indera SC in a dramatic second-half.

"I think LLRC FT played very well tonight," Indera SC coach Ishak Hj Kabon said.

"They played with a very good strategy and purpose in the game.

"We went down twice in the game and I think our defence was a bit loose tonight. We were too comfortable and complacent when we were leading 1-0 in the game.

"LLRC did very well to score two quick goals to steal the lead. However, in the end we did just enough to win the game tonight," he said.

"Azwan played very well in the final 20 minutes but I think Muhammad Nazirul Nazreen changed the game.

"He is a striker and he can play in many positions but I like to put him in midfield or right-back because he can run and set up good pass.

"Any team that made it to the top-four of the tournament is a good team so it is not going to be easy for us," he added.

IKLS FC not worried about Tunas FC

Sunday, November 25, 2012

IT WILL be business as usual for IKLS FC head coach Hj Ali Rahman Hj Sulaiman when they take on Tunas FC in the quarter-final of the Brunei FA Cup at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas tonight at 8.

"I have not heard much of Tunas FC. I know that they are a team from the Tutong District and they are doing pretty well in the tournament at the moment," said Hj Ali Rahman.

"We are not worried about them (Tunas FC) at all. It is not that we disrespect them but I always tell my players not too worry about the opponents too much.

"We need to only focus on ourselves in the game," the coach told The Brunei Times last night.

Hj Ali Rahman also said that he never bothered himself with trying to figure out who IKLS might draw throughout every stage of the tournament.

"We in IKLS never think about who we will be facing at any stage of the tournament. We will face any team.

"Even for this match, we were (initially) told that we will be playing against Kilanas FC in the quarter-final. It was only a few days ago that we were informed that we will be playing Tunas FC," he explained.

Asked about the preparations made by the club ahead of the game, the coach replied: "The preparations have been very good. We played in a few friendly games against the local clubs in the country and the results were very satisfying."

"We won all the friendly matches, including a 5-1 win over QAF FC, one of the best football clubs in the country. Other than that, we have been training since our last win against Jerudong FC last month," he said.

IKLS came back from behind to beat Jerudong FC 2-1 in the third-round of the tournament at the Balapan Track and Field in Berakas on October 29.

Muhd Fakhrul Tamimi Hj Sahri equalised for IKLS FC in the 64th minute before Norman Hj Abdul Rahman scored the winner nine minutes from time.

"The game against Jerudong FC was very important. If we manage to replicate the form during the game against Jerudong FC... I am sure that we will be able to win the game tomorrow," said the coach.

"All the players who featured in the game against Jerudong FC in the third-round of the tournament will start in the game. I hope that our striker Ak Halim Pg Hj Hassan, who is the former Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy player, will be able to perform and score goals for us tonight."

Preparing Gen Next footballers

The aim of the Grassroots Football Certificate Course Level 2 is to develop coaches who nurture and teach football to children in a fun and enjoyable environment. Picture: BT file
Tuesday, November 20, 2012

THE NATIONAL Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) will launch its Grassroots Football Certificate Course Level 2 tomorrow, a three-day practical course that is sure to guarantee a brighter future for Brunei football.

It is a continuation of the Level 1 course the national body organised in August, in which 37 participants received their certificates after being taught the skills they needed to coach grassroots-level football.

With more than 20,000 players in Brunei in the 5-12 year-old bracket, it is the participants' task to provide them with the skills necessary to develop as footballers and ensure it is done in a fun and enjoyable environment.

NFABD is expected to launch its Under-12 league on December 9 and many of the coaches involved in the course will be helping out in terms of the organising and coaching.

Speaking during yesterday's press conference to announce the course, NFABD president Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Rahman Hj Mohiddin outlined the importance of having knowledgeable coaches breed the next generation of footballers and responsible citizens.

"Like any other sport, there is no shortcut or magic (to success) in football," insisted the president at the NFABD House along Jalan Pusat Persidangan.

"It's like planting a tree, you must start from a seed ... and then that tree will bear fruit.

"For us to have a strong national football team at the senior or junior level ... we must have a strong foundation first.

"Like a house, there must be strong pillars. That can only come from the grassroots, and there are no two-ways about it!

"Grassroots football is nothing new in Brunei ... Kids play in schools, homes and mosques all across the country now we are just trying to make everything more organised.

"We are not trying to stop other ongoing programmes though, we want to consolidate everything.

"We have already declared earlier that we are going to have (a) grassroots football (programme), now we are going to implement it.

"Football teaches kids about discipline, rules, laws, competitive spirit ... These are all elements that should be nurtured as early as possible.

"With grassroots football, we feel confident these elements will be inculcated in the minds and hearts of these kids when they grow up.

"Imagine a six-year-old boy playing football without a care or concern in the world ... It's a beautiful scene!" he observed.

The highlight of the course is the mini-festival that the coaches will organise at the Berakas Sports Complex on Thursday morning.

Expected to attract 80-100 schoolchildren from the Brunei-Muara District, the mini-festival will be divided into two categories; 5-8 years-old and 9-12 years-old.

Another bigger festival is on the cards for next February, so Thursday's dry-run will be crucial in providing the coaches the experience they need to organise such events.

One of the course's two facilitators, Ali Hj Ismail said the mini-festival will serve as a test of the participants' organisational skills and ability to coach the kids.

"We want to give the coaches the skills they need to coach young kids and teach them how to make kids enjoy playing football and we will use the components taught in the course to organise the mini-festival," he said.

"They will do everything themselves register the players, divide the teams, organise the medics and drinks. We will just supervise.

"It would be good if the parents come as well so we can educate the parents on what we are doing," he added.

The course's other facilitator, Hj Puspa Hj Mohammad, said that building interest at a young age would be key in maintaining a strong base of players for the future.

"Once the interest is there, the kids will develop more and more," noted Hj Puspa.

"If there are 2,000 or 3,000 kids playing in next February's festival, we can be assured that at least 300 or 400 will develop a serious interest and hopefully they will grow to represent the country one day.

"NFABD have not even been around for two years but we have been working on developing a grassroots programme for a year," said Hj Puspa, adding that he had a two-year plan for grassroots football in the country.

He also said that the association has plans to widen the programme to other districts in the future.

However, that can only be done with a knowledgeable base of coaches - proving once again just why tomorrow's course is so important.

Muara Vella FC lift Veteran FA Cup FOOTBALL

Monday, November 19, 2012

MUARA Vella FC lifted their second trophy of the year by prevailing 4-3 over Semaun Veteran in a penalty shootout after a gritty 1-1 end to their Veteran FA Cup final yesterday.

The result must come as a bitter pill to swallow for Semaun after losing out on the DST Group 3rd President Cup National Veteran Football League in June to Muara Vella as well, the 'Red Giants of Brunei' coming out 3-2 victors on that occasion.

But Muara Vella must certainly feel they deserve their nickname after yesterday's win at the Meragang Sixth Form Centre's football field, the victory proving once and for all that the club which enjoys a rich 16-year history, a rarity for Brunei is a force to be reckon with in local veteran competition.

Muara Vella took the lead in the 20th minute when Budin Apong ran on to a through-ball and rounded the Semaun goalkeeper, much to the delight of the strong contingent of vocal Muara Vella fans.

Semaun would reply eight minutes later though, Mohd Sadiy Abdullah running past Muara Vella's right-back and blasting the ball to the top-left corner.

Muara Vella looked to have the better of the chances in the rest of the first half but failed to break down an organised Semaun defence in the sweltering heat.

Neither team were able to stamp their mark in the second-half and there were few clear-cut chances, though Muara Vella had the best opportunity to make it 2-1 when hitting the crossbar late in the game.

As the grey skies turned into rain in the dying minutes of the match, it became obvious the tie would have to be decided on penalties. Semaun step up to the plate first and easily converted their shot, taking a 1-0 lead after Muara Vella missed their penalty.

Both teams made their next two attempts to set the scores at 3-2, and saves by both goalkeepers meant it would be Semaun who had the chance to seal the deal with their last penalty.

Unfortunately for the taker, he missed his chance, and Muara Vella didn't forcing the the penalties into sudden-death with the scores set at 3-3.

Muara Vella's goalkeeper saved the next shot and the team's fans, who thought they had won, prematurely rushed onto the field not realising they had another penalty to take.

After some discussion with the referee, they were forced back to the sidelines but they were soon back on the pitch and celebrating in the rain when their player converted his attempt.

"Our veteran team has certainly achieved a lot this year," smiled Muara Vella manager Mohammad Hj Tunjang.

"Though we were not fully-fit for this match, our teamwork helped us play well.

"I was confident we could win when the match went to penalties because we have a good goalkeeper in Zulkifli Hj Masri and we have good penalty-takers," he added.

Muara Vella received a trophy, medals and $300 while Semaun took home a trophy, medals and $200. National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam general secretary Mohd Noor Hj Abdullah presented the prizes to both teams.

FOOTBALL Nat'l coach to attend AFC course

Sunday, November 18, 2012

KWON Oh-son is looking to be the first coach in Brunei to receive an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Professional Diploma after returning to South Korea on Friday to sit for the most advanced coaching course in Asia.

The national football coach was given an invitation to attend the Nov 21-30 course and gain the highly prized 'P' licence by the Korean Football Association (KFA), who in 2006, became the first football association in Asia to introduce the four-module course.

The AFC website states that the course is conducted exclusively by the AFC on a biennial basis for coaches who have an AFC "A" licence.

However, the KFA has been allowed to organise the course to provide more opportunities to professional team coaches for keeping themselves abreast of the latest in coaching techniques.

The course comprises three sessions in a year, including programmes like fitness conditioning, game and strategy analysis, professional club management, sport medicine, sport psychology, communication and club visits.

Kwon also said that further requirements include a 5000 word dissertation and an attachment with a foreign club.

Kwon has had a memorable year in football after guiding the national Under-21 team to victory in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) which the Sultanate hosted in March and helmed the national team's campaign at last month's AFF (ASEAN Football Federation) Suzuki Cup 2012 qualifiers in Myanmar, where their two win-two loss record prevented them from qualifying for the tournament-proper.

However, the first thing on his mind when met prior to leaving was how best to express his gratitude for the fans' support in 2012.

Though he spoke via his son as an interpreter, it soon became obvious that the main reason he decided to sit for the course was so he could better serve Brunei football fans.

"I want to thank the fans for their support throughout the HBT and the rest of the year ... and I hope they will continue doing so," said the South Korean when met recently.

"I feel it's my responsibility to make the fans happy ... And no matter what the situation, I always have to do my best for them.

"(That is why) it is my desire to (be able to) teach at the highest level and to the latest standards applicable for national and club teams.

"KFA are conducting the course to produce high-level coaches who have the expertise to coach in Europe ... and I feel lucky to have been given the chance to sit for it," he said.

Though the course will take a year to complete, Kwon will return to Brunei - after a deserved month-long break to recharge his batteries - eager to apply what he has learnt so far.

"When I come back in December I plan to carry out trials in all the four districts to find players for next year's SEA Games in Myanmar," he said.

"I feel we can't always rely on the same players. We have to give a chance for new players (to emerge). (Only if we) keep scouting will we improve," he insisted.

Despite coming to Brunei in 2004 to take charge of the country's football set-up, Kwon still enjoys a strong relationship with the KFA.

KFA president Cho Jung-yeon, who upon hearing that Kwon is in charge of the national team, donated 300 balls to the country last year - an unprecedented gift for Brunei football.

No doubt, the country will be receiving an even greater gift from KFA when Kwon gets his 'P' license.

Brunei-Muara District eyes own football league

Friday, November 16, 2012

THE Brunei-Muara District may get a football league of its own in the near future.

The Brunei Muara District Football Association (PBDBM) yesterday revealed plans to host a proper league for clubs based in the Brunei-Muara District next year.

PBDBM Secretary General Hj Mohd Noor Hj Hamid (pic) told The Brunei Times that the association has invited seven teams for a round robin league which will start next Friday as a trial run to give the association an idea of what will have to be done in preparation for the league.

He said that the association needs to survey and consult with other clubs and teams in the district before starting the league.

Hj Mohd Noor stressed that the association must make sure the teams are committed to playing in the league and that the teams are prepared in terms of their resource management.

"We have observed in other local leagues that teams are formed but important necessities were missing... such as not having enough players or that the team does not have complete uniforms, the quantity is there but the quality is also needed," said the secretary general.

Hj Mohd Noor added that ensuring these attributes would also help the teams raise their standard of football.

"The teams can develop themselves in the long run... the district league could help them grow further when participating in other leagues," he said.

A team managers meeting for the seven participating teams will be held at 7.50am tomorrow at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

According to the press statement, team managers who fail to attend the meeting would have their team pulled out of the competition. The seven teams are MIISA United FC, Besa FC, Pengkalan Batu, Seri Wira, PITA, Rimba Star and Pancur Murai FC.

The first league match would be held at 3pm next Friday at the Menglait Sports Complex football field.

PBDBM has yet to announce which teams would play in the opener. It also reported that matches would be played every Friday and Sunday.
