POWERHOUSES Indera SC and Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) made their ascent to the top half of the DST Super League after picking up their second wins last night.

Two-time defending champions Indera took down Tabuan Muda (national Under-23 football team) 2-0 at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas to jump from fifth to third.

Meanwhile at the Tutong Sports Complex, MS ABDB moved from sixth to fourth after Mohd Fadhli Hj Salleh scored a brace to beat Kilanas FC 2-0.

Both teams are level on six points with the same goal difference.

Tabuan Muda - who are to represent the country at next month’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore - are still second in the league with seven points from five games, trailing Najip I-Team by two points.

Their game against Indera was marred by poor crosses, but the latter proved why they are the tournament’s defending champions with two magical deliveries in each half.

Given too much space to cross, Indera winger Ak Mohd Azrul Ariffin Pg Hj Metussin punished Tabuan Muda whopping in a spectacular cross met by a towering header from Sam Frank to lead 1-0 at the 10th minute.

It was Frank’s first goal for his new club after moving from QAF FC.

Tabuan Muda started the second half better but poor deliveries continued as neither teams made any clear cut chances until Indera midfielder Muhd Nurikhwan Othman’s stroke of genius.

In the 68th minute, he drew in Tabuan Muda’s defenders and sent a sublime through pass to the unmarked Hamizan Aziz Sulaiman who blasted Indera’s second goal of the night.

Tabuan Muda showed glimmers of breaking through the flanks but Indera’s rock solid right back Muhd Alif Hj Mahdini killed any hopes of a Tabuan Muda miracle.

Indera head coach Hj Omar Hj Jamil was ecstatic with the victory and their resolute 4-5-1 formation.
“I can confidently say we controlled the midfield with five players in the centre and our lone striker also held the ball well,” added Hj Omar.

The coach vowed to keep fighting on to improve themselves to defend their title and be champions again after winning in 2013 and 2014.

TABUAN Muda (the national under-23 football team) picked up their second win in the DST Super League with a 2-1 victory over the Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) last night.
It was the perfect start for Tabuan Muda after they grabbed the lead in the eighth minute through Md Nur Syazwan Halidi at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The lead was short lived, though, as Md Nazirul Arsat equalised for the policemen three minutes later.

Aimmil Rahman Ramlee restored the advantage for Tabuan Muda in the 34th minute and it proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Tabuan Muda are on seven points from four matches and second in the 10-team table behind leaders Najip I-Team, who are on nine points and have a game in hand.

MS PDB are currently in third and have four points to their name.

The competition continues tomorrow with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) up against Kilanas FC at the Tutong Sports Complex at 8.15pm.

Tabuan Muda are gearing up for the upcoming 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore.
They have been drawn in Group B with defending champions Thailand, 2009 and 2011 winners Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos and Timor Leste. Hosts Singapore are in Group A with Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines.

The dates of the matches have yet to be announced, but the football competition will start on May 29.

DST Super League titleholders Indera SC started their campaign off with a 2-0 win over IKLS FC in last night’s game at the Tutong Sports Complex.

Ak Mohammad Azrul Ariffin Pg Hj Metussin opened the scoring in the 13th minute against the newly promoted IKLS but would have to wait until the 93rd minute until Hamizan Aziz Sulaiman made sure of the points with the team’s second goal.

Indera were to open their title defence on April 5 against last year’s runners-up Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB), but the game was postponed.

MS ABDB kicked off their season with a 2-0 win over Tabuan Muda (national Under-23 team) on Sunday to surge to fifth, and last night’s result means Indera have the exact same statistics with their championship rivals.

Lun Bawang, MS PDB sekadar seri

Goals by Pvt Budiman Jumat and L/Cpl Ak Mohd Safri Pg Hj Othman in the first half sealed all three points for the armymen at the Tutong Sports Complex.

The forward got another opportunity in the 25th minute after finding space inside the box but fired just wide.

Tabuan Muda put up a string of good passes in the 33rd minute to set Mohd Rakin Ramli through on goal but MS ABDB custodian Pvt Mohd Tarmizi Hj Mat Johari came off his line to close out the shot.

Pvt Mohd Fadhli Hj Salleh headed a freekick on target two minutes later but his effort was caught by Ahsanuddin.

Tabuan Muda had a good chance in the 41st minute after Mohd Hanif@Abdul Hadi Hamir threaded the MS ABDB backline with a pass but Mohd Rakin failed to get a good touch resulting in Pvt Mohd Tarmizi collecting the ball.

MS ABDB doubled their lead just before the halftime whistle after L/Cpl Ak Mohd Safri headed home Pvt Budiman’s freekick from the left.

The armymen could have added to their tally just four minutes after the interval but the ball was cleared off the line by Tabuan Muda.

It was the second straight game that Tabuan Muda failed to convert from the 12-yard spot.

MS ABDB went on the attack again in the 78th minute after L/Cpl Mohd Baharin Hamidon broke down the right but he fired straight at Ahsanuddin.

The armymen should have added to the scoresheet just before the final whsitle after a defensive error by the Tabuan Muda backline gifting Pvt Razimie Ramli possession.

The latter rifled his shot from inside the box but it bounced off the right post.

MS ABDB manager Major Pg Farisan Pg Metassan was delighted with the win and knows there is still a long way to go for the two-time runners-up

“We got the win against a good team,” said Major Pg Farisan in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph.

“It is a good start to our season but it is still very early and we are still fine tuning our team with some new faces,” he added.

On the other hand, Tabuan Muda head coach Stephen Ng Heng Seng felt that this was a good test for them.

“They (MS ABDB) are a very good team for us to play against," said Ng.

"I thought we played better in the second half and dominated but the game was already lost in the first half,” he added.

The competition continues tomorrow with two-time defending champions Indera SC kick off their title defence against IKLS FC at 8.15pm at the same venue.

Najip continue impressive run in DST Super League

Sunday, April 19, 2015

NAJIP I-TEAM made it three out of three wins to the start of their DST Super League campaign with a 4-0 victory over Wijaya FC last night.

Azri Zahari scored a double while Mushready Chuchu and Mohd Amirul Hamrey Mohd Norshaney bagged a goal each in the triumph at the Berakas Sports Complex.

It was fluid passing by Najip I-Team that saw Azri break the deadlock from inside the box in the 12th minute.

Wijaya were pushing forward in search for an equaliser but nothing materialised from their efforts. Azri was put through on goal in the 22nd minute but Wijaya goalkeeper Md Burhanuddin Hj Edy Asmady came out of the box to try to stop him but instead brought him down.

Wijaya were given a let off after the referee reached for his pocket and only pulled out a yellow card.

Wijaya got on target in the 28th minute after Hj Mohd Subhi Abdilah Hj Bakir fired a freekick from 25 yards out only straight at Najip I-Team custodian Ron Junior Philip. Azri got at the end of a long ball inside the box three minutes later but Md Burhanuddin did well to deny him.

Wijaya had a good chance to equalise in the 42nd minute after Khalil Saab brought down a long ball inside the box but only to fire wide.

It took Najip I-Team just six minutes into the second half to add to the scoresheet with Mushready Chuchu heading home a freekick from the right.

Another opportunity came for Najip I-Team after Haziman Hj Abd Halim was put through on goal in the 57th minute but could only find the side netting.

Najip I-Team made it 3-0 on the hour mark after a long ball bounce off a Wijaya defender inside the box for Azri to slot it past Md Burhanuddin.

Azri got another chance in the 68th minute after a chested down a freekick from their own half but blasted it off target.

The next minute saw Najip I-Team skipper Ratano Hj Tuah put a ball to the middle but Azri fired it over from close range.

Najip I-Team added to the scoresheet after a long ball set Mohd Amirul Hamrey off to the races before slotting it home in between two Wijaya markers to complete the win.

Najip I-Team head coach Johari Hj Bungsu was delighted with the performance of his charges.

“Our game improved after we scored the opening goal in the first half. We didn’t get that many chances in the second half but we took them each time we got them,” said Johari in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph. “Our finishing was good tonight (Saturday night) especially Azri and even our set pieces were alright,” he added.

Over at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, Mohd Alikhan Hj Mohd Yakob salvaged a point for Lun Bawang FC after netting in the 93rd minute for a 1-1 draw against the Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council.

The policemen looked set for all three points with a goal by L/cpl Jasriman Hj Johari in the 31st minute separated the two sides.

TABUAN Muda (the national Under-23 football team) barged into the win column of the DST Super League after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Kilanas FC last night.

They started their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Jerudong FC butcame up with a commanding perfomance last night and should have scored more.

Mohd Asnawi Syazni Abd Aziz was a constant threat to Kilanas and bagged a brace in the win at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

It didn’t take long for Tabuan Muda to assert command on the match after Mohd Asnawi Syazni got at the end of the corner for a sixth minute lead.

The advantage could have been doubled in the 13th minute after Ak Md Halim Pg Hassan rocked the crossbar with a powerful shot.

Mohd Kamarul Ariffin Hj Zaini was then judged to handle the ball in the box on the rebound resulting in a penalty for Tabuan Muda.

Skipper Md Khairil Shame Suhaimi stepped up to take the ensuing spotkick but was denied by the left post.

Another chance came for Tabuan Muda in the 25th minute after Kilanas goalkeeper Abd Rahman @ Hazmie Hayat Emzah had to deal with an initial shot but Md Nur Syazwan Halidi blasted it over on the rebound.

Mohd Asnawi Syazni delivered a cross from the left but Mohd Shafie Mohd Effendy couldn’t put his volley on target at the far post in the 34th minute.

Mohd Shafie turned provider two minutes later with a cross from the right, but Ak Md Halim Pg Hassan’s volley was also off the mark.

Mohd Nor Hidayatullah Hj Zaini had a good chance to pull one back for Kilanas the next minute but his shot finished at the wrong side of the left post.

Mohd Asnawi Syazni scored his second of the match six minutes after the interval by heading home Saiful Amar Hj Adis’s corner at the near post.

It was 3-0 after Ak Md Halim got to the ball first before the onrushing Abd Rahman @ Hazmie Hayat in the 62nd minute.

Tabuan Muda added to the scoresheet in the 68th minute after a 3-on-1 situation saw Mohd Shafie easily slot it home.

It remained all Tabuan Muda but they couldn’t add to the scoresheet.

Tabuan Muda coach Stephen Ng Heng Seng was delighted to see improvements on his side.

“There is some improvement in terms of the team’s movement. We didn’t want to rush and goals were not the objective,” said Ng in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph.

“More importantly it was about how we shape up. It is not about my instructions but the boys have been working hard over the past week,” he added.

When asked about their finishing, Ng replied: “It takes time. We are not a strong attacking side and considering we are to play international competitions like the SEA Games, all out attack shouldn’t be our objective.

“We just have to play a stable game. At the end of the day we have to try and get results at the SEA Games,” he concluded.

The competition continues tomorrow with IKLS FC up against Jerudong FC at the Tutong Sports Complex at 8.15pm.

THE Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) grinded out a 1-0 victory over IKLS FC in the DST Super League season opener last night.

Hj Khairil Roisanykhan Hj Isakhan netted the only goal in the second half to separate the two sides at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

It was an even opening half and IKLS, who were promoted from the DST Premier League after finishing second last season, could have got in front on the half hour mark.

Ak Mohd Wafri Pg Mohd Jefri fired from inside the box but MS PDB goalkeeper Pg Mohd Muizzuddin Pg Ismail produced a good save.

MS PDB got their chances and had the ball cleared off the line twice four minutes later.

The policemen almost broke the deadlock in the 37th minute after IKLS custodian Mohammad Hafiz Ikhwan Hasmali misjudged a free-kick from the midway line.

The ball slipped past his hands but he was fortunate to watch it bounce off the wrong side of the right post.
IKLS got another opportunity in the 39th minute after Ak Ammar Syafie Pg Hassanudin got a free header inside the box, only to watch it float over the bar.

MS PDB came out more focused and were keeping better ball possession after the interval.

They got forward in the 53rd minute off a counter attack but Mohd Faiq Ramlee put his shot from 30 yards out just over.

MS PDB finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute after a 35-yard freekick by Hj Khairil Roisanykhan took a deflection at the near post and into goal.

The lead should have been doubled just five minutes later after Hj Khairil Roisanykhan broke down the right and put the ball down the middle.

However, Mohd Bohari Mohammad Hasan somehow blasted it over from close range.

IKLS were using the long ball to get past the policemen’s defence but they couldn’t seem to finish.
Their final chance came four minutes into injury time with a free-kick from 30 yards out but Mohd Amirul Muhamad Rasyid could only fire it straight to the Pg Mohd Muizzuddin.

MS PDB head coach S/Sgt Sahrin Md Jaya was relieved to get all three points from the encounter.
“We were lucky to get that goal. We created a lot of chances but just couldn’t score,” said Sahrin in an interview with The Brunei Times after the win.

“We still need to brush up on our finishing as well as improve on our fitness,” he added.

The competition continues tomorrow with Najip FC going up against Kilanas FC at the Tutong Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, the clash of the titans between two-time defending champions Indera SC and two-time runners-up Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) which was set for Sunday has been postponed.

Lun Bawang, who are this season’s other new boys after finishing last year’s DST Premier League campaign undefeated enroute to the title, kick off their DST Super League involvement on April 18 against - coincidentally - MS PDB.
