KILANAS FC outplayed BESA FC 5-1 in last night's DST Brunei FA Cup third-round match at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Kilanas commanded most of the possession in the first half with through balls and one-two passing, leaving BESA to defend at all costs.

They marked their first goal in the sixth minute when Mohamed Azmi Hj Zainin was fed a cross from the right, with the striker easily tapping the ball home.

Their second goal was the result of a 22nd minute mistake from a BESA defender, who accidentally passed the ball to Kilanas' Naasiruddeen Abdul Wahab in the penalty box, the midfielder scoring with a right-footed shot.

Syazwan Azizi Hj Mohd Taib made it 3-0 in the 29th minute when he ran onto a through ball which tore BESA's defence apart, and just two minutes later, Mohd Nor Hidayatullah Hj Zaini sprinted with the ball to the right and fired the ball pass a helpless BESA FC goalkeeper with a shot from just outside the penalty box.

The second-half saw more ball possession for BESA, but they were limited to long-range attempts because of Kilanas' strong four-man defence.

Mohd Khairul Hj Abd Halim made it 5-0 with a 73rd minute penalty to the left which crept in under BESA goalkeeper Md Hasif Hj Amdan.

Although the game was over for BESA FC, the team managed to get themselves a late goal two minutes from time when a cross from the right found Hj Mohd Aliakbar Damong Hj Omarali, who tapped the ball into goal.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Kilanas FC assistant coach Mohd Radzuan Hj Madali said that the team won because of their initial strategy of going full-steam ahead in the first-half.

"Our tactic worked as we just went all-out on offence in the first-half," he said.

The assistant coach added that even though BESA were pressing them in the second-half, they still controlled the game with good defence and counter-attacks.

Tonight's match will see Liang Lumut Recreation Club Football Team (LLRC FT) taking on Setia Perdana at the Balapan Track and Field at 8pm.

IKLS FC stage comeback to upset Jerudong FC

A GOAL down in the second-half, IKLS FC came back fighting to defeat Jerudong FC 2-1 in the third-round FA Cup match at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas last night.

The first-half witnessed a fast-paced game but both teams matching each other in offence and defence resulting in a goalless half.

What broke the deadlock in the second-half was when Jerudong FC was awarded a penalty kick in the 49th minute because of a hard slide tackle by an IKLS FC defender and Asmadi Ibrahim easily scored making it 1-0.

IKLS FC's equaliser came only in the 64th minute, when Jerudong FC's goalkeeper misjudged a bouncing ball and IKLS FC's Muhd Fakhrul Tamimi Hj Sahri cashed in on the opportunity to tap it into the net.

With both teams equal terms, they strive hard to break the deadlock resulting in fouls and a scramble for the ball. However, 81st minute saw the winning goal. After an interception, IKLS FC launched a counter attack. A low cross from the right found a waiting Ateraba@ Norman Hj Abdul Rahman, who immediately used his right foot to kick the ball into goal.

The final score was 2-1.

IKLS FC's Coach Hj Mohd Ali Rahman Hj Sulaiman told The Brunei Times that the win was a quite surprise especially when they defeated an established team like Jerudong FC. "It was a good game, I believe that it was fitness that had us win the game," said Hj Mohd Ali Rahman.

He added that the team played as a unit in both attack and defence.

In today's match, BESA FC take on Kilanas FC at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas at 8pm.

Majra edge BSRC in 7-goal thriller

Thursday, October 25, 2012

MAJRA FC defeated Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) 4-3 in the third-round FA Cup match at the Berakas Sports Complex last night.

In the early moments of the first half, Majra FC played long balls and used both their left and right flanks to get crosses and through balls into BSRC's penalty box.

Despite the early onslaught BSRC held out against Majra FC's attacks, and scored the first goal in the 22nd minute against the run of play from a counter attack.

A BSRC defender intercepted the ball before releasing a long pass into Majra FC's territory that found BSRC's Syazwa Mohd. He quickly sprinted with the ball into Majra FC's penalty box and fired the ball home.

The game looked done and dusted for BSRC when they were awarded a penalty in the 36th minute following a hard slide tackle by a Majra FC defender in the box.

BSRC's Junaidi Brahim took the penalty and scored, making it 2-0.

However, Majra FC made a stunning comeback, starting in the 42nd minute when a through pass from the left found a waiting Mohd Azri Zahari who quickly shot the ball with his left foot, pulling a goal back to make the scores 2-1.

In the second half, BSRC's counter attacks paid off again. The team from KB restored their two goal lead when the ball was passed to their striker Syazwi Mohd.

He beat his man inside the Majra penalty box from the left side and scored his second goal of the game in the 60th minute.

It was not over for Majra FC though, when a cornerkick from the right was awarded to them and striker Faizal Mohd headed the ball into goal in the 71st minute, making it 3-2.

Faizal equalised just two minutes after his first goal when he received a long ball in the middle of BSRC's penalty box and the player turning well and rifling the ball into the net.

With Majra FC's relentless attack, Mohd Azri Zahari scored the winning goal in the 87th minute with another long ball taking apart the BSRC defence.

Mohd Azri had to evade two defenders before firing the winner from the left side of goal capping a remarkable night for his team.

Majra FC Assistant Manager Hj Mahaddi Hj Madziin told The Brunei Times that the change of formation after half time helped them win the game.

"We started in the first half with with the formation of 4-4-2 but since we were trailing behind, we changed our formation to 4-3-3," said Hj Mahaddi.

"First half we had many chances but we had made mistakes, but our players still had the fighting spirit to win the game," he said.

Hj Mahaddi explained that the tactical change gave the team a much better chance for attack.

Majra's assistant manager also praised the opposition saying it was a great game and that BSRC were quite formidable opponents to play against.

Majra FC's biggest achievement to date was winning the DST Group Brunei League Cup final in 2011.

This Saturday's match will witness Sporting FT play against MS ABDB at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Majra confident but wary of BSRC

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

MAJRA FC feel confident going into their third-round FA Cup match against Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) but assistant manager Hj Mahaddi Hj Mat Zain is well aware of the threat their opponents pose in their clash tonight at the Berakas Sports Complex.

"We are not going to take them (BSRC) lightly. They have been on the Brunei football scene for quite a long time and they have very good and experienced players," Hj Mahaddi told The Brunei Times last night.

"We played them twice a long time ago and we won the two matches. But they are a different team now and the team look good," he said.

" We just started training three weeks ago and the players are confident. I trust my players ... to deliver a good performance tomorrow."

Majra FC's biggest achievement to date was winning the DST Group Brunei League Cup final in 2011.

And they will be looking to add more silverware to their club's cabinet by winning the Brunei FA Cup this year.

"It is every football club's ambitions to win titles... It is not going to be easy, but we will give everything in this tournament," Hj Mahaddi said.

The team will also be boosted by the return of key player Azri Zahari, who laced up for the national team during the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup qualifiers in Myanmar.

Hj Mahaddi said the 21-year-old would be one of the players to watch out for tonight.

"We will use Azri's speed in the game to create chances and score goals. We have been using him as a striker for several games now and he has enjoyed playing in that position. He will be partnering striker Faisal Mohammad after a long absence due to work commitments. Faisal was the second top goal scorer in the DST league a few years back. It is good to have him back this year," the assistant manager added.

Majra FC's former DPMM FC players Yussof Salleh, Abang Norsilmy Abang Hj Taha and Julremi Zaini will also be lacing up for tonight's encounter.

The club, which was established in 2003, booked their berth in the second round of the Brunei FA Cup after defeating non-league team Seri Wira FC 4-1 at the Belapan Track & Field on June 20 before receiving a bye into the third round.

BSRC on the other hand played in last season's DST National Football League and will be competing in the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam Premier League next season.

They defeated Hijrah FT 3-0 at the Balapan Track and Field in Berakas last Tuesday to qualify for the FA Cup's third round.

BSRC manager Pg Saiful Rizal Pg Moktar Putih said the team would look to get an early goal and hold on to the lead.

"Majra FC are one of the strongest teams in the country. The plan is to play with 3-5-2 formation, get an early goal and defend, but we know that they are capable of scoring too," Pg Saiful Rizal said.

"It is going to be a 50-50 game but I think Majra FC will have a slight advantage over us. However, we will try our best."

Najip FC pay the penalty in FA Cup

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

SETIA Perdana's goalkeeper, Roslan Hj Rosli, was the hero of last night's match after saving a penalty that sent his team through into the third round of the Brunei FA Cup.

Held at the Berakas Sports Complex, Setia Perdana defeated Najip FC 6-5 in a penalty shootout after both teams were tied 2-2 following extra time.

In the first half, Najip FC struggled to maintain possession of the ball as Setia Perdana were relentless in attack using their left-sided midfielders to get crosses into Najip FC's penalty box.

With Setia Perdana threatening to score, Najip FC's defenders had to keep their defence strong and were forced to clear the ball out of danger.

However, Setia Perdana's persistence was rewarded in the the 25th minute when Mohd Omar Ali Hj Ladis tucked the ball home after Najip FC Goalkeeper, Mohd Fuad Lasa spilt a low wild shot from outside the area.

Setia Perdana did not have time to celebrate as Najip FC quickly scored an equaliser following a minute after the first goal was scored.

A free kick taken near the right corner post of Setia Perdana's side of the field found an unmarked Sahrul Hj Sabatu, who tapped the ball into the net for Najip FC.

In the second half, Setia Perdana's Mohd Omar Ali struck again when a cross from the left side found the striker, who raced into the middle of the penalty box, to fire a low volley making it 2-1 in the 51st minute.

In the 59th minute Najip FC made a second comeback from a freekick just outside the right-side of the penalty box.

Huzaimi Hj Tengah struck the freekick which hit a Setia Perdana defender deflecting it into goal tying the scores at 2-2.

In the 90th minute, it looked to be the end for Setia Perdana when Najip FC was awarded a penalty kick, but Setia Perdana's goalkeeper Roslan was not to be beaten when he dived the right way and kept the ball out of goal.

At extra time, and the onset of pouring rain, both teams were tired but did not let up, with no goals, the game was decided on penalty shootouts to which Setia Perdana came out as the better team.

Setia Perdana's team manager Hj Lalim Hj Piut said that he was content with the game but commented that both teams were playing too safe.

"It was an equal match but we were more in control on the offense," said Hj Lalim.

Setia Perdana will face LLRC FT next Wednesday (Oct 31st) at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas at 8pm.

Tomorrow's match will witness Majra FC take on Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) at the Berakas Sports Complex at 8pm.

FUTSAL Indera Sports Club emerge Red Bull Futsal champions

INDERA Sports Club ended the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) Red Bull Futsal Championship 2012 as the only undefeated team after beating the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) 4-2 in yesterday's final.

The game at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex's Indoor Stadium was played at a fast tempo in the first half and it did not take long for Indera to score their first goal.

Just three minutes into the game, a pass from the right to Ak Mohd Naqib Pg Timbang saw him unleash a low shot to the left to make it 1-0.

Their new-found confidence helped them secure their second goal when Mohd Amirulizam Pungut saw an opportunity after some quick one-two passing and shot pass MS ABDB's goalkeeper in the 7th minute.

The army men were not licked yet, and their quick tricks and low passes provided Md Zairul Hazmin with MS ABDB's first goal in the 10th and the equaliser in the 17th minute.

The second half saw MS ABDB with more possession but it was Indera that were able to get in front after some good counter-attacking play.

MS ABDB's long ball tactics proved to be their undoing when in the 32nd minute, a quick pass fell to Mohd Amirulizam who was waiting at MS ABDB's half going on to dribble past two army men and score his second goal to put Indera up 3-2.

They sealed the game when another interception from another long ball created their fourth goal.

Indera's counter-attack created a three-on-one situation and Mohd Faiz had to only wait for the ball on the left before calmly slotting it home.

The only chance that MS ABDB got to get a goal back was a free kick in the last minutes of the game, but that too was in vain as the shot went straight to Indera's goalkeeper who successfully blocked the ball with his chest and kept it out of danger.

Indera's captain Muhd Ulfi Aminuddin told The Brunei Times that it was a tight game and that the team was surprised to have won the final.

"We did not expect anything from the game but we surely wanted to win," said Muhd Ulfi.

"The team just concentrated on playing our best (as) we have a team of well-rounded players and we play well together," said the 22-year-old.

Indera received $3,000, a challenge trophy and an individual trophy and medals while MS ABDB were awarded $2,000, a trophy and medals.

Arbisham won third place after beating Kota Junior 4-2 to take home $1,000, a trophy and medals.

Organised by NFABD, the tournament kicked off in April with 40 teams playing in eight groups.

DPMM FC keep hopes alive

Monday, October 22, 2012

DPMM FC kept their Singapore League title hopes alive after a 2-1 win over Woodlands Wellington FC last night.

Though Guntar Djafril put the hosts ahead in the 26th minute, goals from team top scorer Shahrazen Said, who has netted 13 times this season, and captain Rosmin Hj Mohd Kamis gave the visitors all three points at the Woodlands Stadium in Singapore, leaving them four points adrift of leaders and defending champions Tampines Rovers FC but with a game in hand.

Brunei's only professional club need to end their season with two must-win matches against Hougang United FC on Wednesday and Balestier Khalsa FC on November 2 and then hope for a slip up from Tampines when they close their campaign with a November 1 clash against Malaysian Under-23 national team Harimau Muda.

DPMM FC coach Vjeran Simunic didn't exactly have an easy time preparing for last night's game against basement dwellers Woodlands as 12 of his players were on national duty for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) qualifiers in Myanmar, while Brazilian centre-back Tales Ricarte dos Santos is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The Croatian knew that dropped points would see Tampines retain their crown, which is why last night's win was all the sweeter.

"We are proud because now we have made the competition interesting ... Tampines would have been the champions if we didn't win," said Simunic after the match.

"I'm very satisfied with the three points as it's not easy to mount a comeback.

"We won our last three games heading into tonight's game so the three-week break for the AFF qualifiers didn't help us.

"Santos is out but veteran Pg Sallehuddin Pg Hj Damit did well to control the back line ... He's really good for us right now," said Simunic of the 1999 Malaysia Cup winner. Croatian midfielder Ivan Jerkovic missed a fifth-minute penalty, which Simunic said affected the team's morale.

"It was the first time in his life he missed and the team were a little down after that."

They fell behind after a counter-attack from the Rams, who were searching for only their third win of the season.

But Shahrazen, who once again proved just why he is held in such high regard by the club's fans after heading home the equaliser after connecting with a Sairol Hj Sahari free-kick three minutes from half-time.

Rosmin then put DPMM FC in front after a pass from Hj Muhd Subhi Abdilah Hj Bakir in the 69th minute. Shahrazen's goal pushed him to joint-second in the S-League scoring table alongside Geylang United FC's Jozef Kaplan and SAF's Mislav Karoglan last season's S-League top scorer with 33 goals. Home United's French striker Frederic Mendy looks certain to end the season as top-scorer after finding the back of the net 20 times.

Today's sole match will see SAF take on Gombak United FC at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium in Singapore.

MS ABDB gun down QAF FC

Sunday, October 21, 2012

THE Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) gunned down QAF FC 2-0 to march into the third round of the Brunei FA Cup at the Berakas Sports Complex last night.

The first half saw some uncharacteristic display of sloppy passing by both teams but MS ABDB would get into rhythm first, threatening to score multiple times only to be denied by the QAF FC goalkeeper.

QAF FC, meanwhile, struggled to maintain possession, and with MS ABDB attacking in numbers, it was only a matter of time until they found the back of the net.

The first goal of the night came courtesy of Ak Mohammad Safri Pg Othman who headed home a Budiman Jumat cross six minutes after the start of the second half.

MS ABDB continued their strong showing and wreaked havoc on the QAF FC defence, sending in crosses into the box only to be let down by poor finishing.

QAF FC did show sparks of brilliance in search of their equaliser, even finding the back of the net in the 63rd minute but the goal was disallowed.

Mohd Nur Ikhmal Awg Damit would seal the victory for MS ABDB by doubling their lead with a simple tap-in in the 78th minute.

MS ABDB manager Suhaimi Jamali was pleased with the result, saying that his team deserved the win after dominating the game.

"As we all know, we have the advantage on fitness. The plan was to score early in the game to put the pressure off us but that did not work," said Suhaimi.

"We knew that QAF FC will try to slow the game down to push it into extra-time or penalty. In the second-half we made good use of our wing players to send in crosses and finally got our two goals.

"Everyone did a very good job today. Both our national team players in ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, Haizul Rani Metussin and Captain Affendy Hj Akup, did very well in the game," he added.

The other Brunei FA Cup second round match of the night saw IKLS FC thrash MPKS Matan FC 15-0 at the Balapan Track and Field in Berakas.
