ROYAL
Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) won the DST Sumbangsih Cup
for the second time after edging Indera Sports Club (SC) 2-1 in the
traditional curtain raiser last night.
The club’s best player last season, striker Azizi Ali Rahman and
defender Hj Mohd Yussof Hj Mat Yassin both found the net for the
defending DST Super League champions at the Balapan Track and Field of
the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
“It wasn’t an easy game…we worked hard until the end to win…and I am
very happy for the club to win this Cup for the second time,” said MS
ABDB manager Major (A) Razanol Hardi Abd Razak in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match.
MS ABDB lifted the first Sumbangsih Cup title in 2014 defeating same opponent Indera with a 2-1 score line.
“I am very proud of my players, they managed to control their temper
throughout the match and keep their calm…we know a match against Indera
is always going to be intense, but I think my players handled it pretty
well,” he added.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw both sides were out of sync in
their attempt to find the net with some missed shots and sloppy passes.
Indera managed to string some good passes together and slowly winning
the battle in midfield with their one-two passes and ability to spread
the play wide.
Meanwhile, the army men were resorting to long ball play and shooting from distance.
They nearly scored when their captain Ak Safri Pg Othman blasted from
20 metres out, but Indera’s goalkeeper Mohd Ahsanuddin Hj Mohd Dani
kept the ball out with an acrobatic save.
Azizi showed his goal-scoring prowess for the MS ABDB when he fired a
right footer into the bottom right corner to put his team ahead in the
31st minute.
Indera responded when Mohd Nur Ikhmal Damit was set free in the
penalty box by Asri Hj Aspar, but the midfielder’s weak shot went
straight into the arms of MS ABDB goalkeeper Mohd Tarmizi Hj Mat Johari.
The second-half saw Indera got off to a strong start with a beautiful play by Muiz Sisa and Asri at the left flank.
The duo set Hamizan Aziz Sulaiman unmarked at the edge of the penalty box.
The striker unleashed a powerful shot, but goalkeeper Mohd Tarmizi made a spectacular finger-tip save to keep his team in lead.
Indera new player Hardi Bujang settled well in the team displaying
calm and composed play throughout the game alongside Shahrin Hj Momin.
But the team lacked the flare in the attack with striker Mohd Hamizan Abdul Aziz Sulaiman their only forward.
Azizi was taken off with a suspected injury midway in the second-half and was replaced by Razimie Ramli.
Razimi made an immediate impact just a few minutes later beating
Indera’s offside trap to latch onto a long ball from the midfield, but
the striker was brought down by Mohd Ahsanuddin with a dangerous two
footed tackle at the edge of the penalty box.
The goalkeeper was sent off for the challenge and replaced by Ak Omar Nuraqamaddin Pg Salehuddin.
Hj Mohd Yussof would convert the ensuing free-kick to double MS ABDB lead in the 73rd minute.
Asri scored a consolation in the 89th minute, but MS ABDB would defend their one goal lead until the final whistle.
Present as the guest of honour last night was Hj Amer Iskandar Pehin
Dato Hj Zakaria, the Assistant General Manager (Business Division) of
DST.
INDERA SC’s head coach Haji Omar bin Haji Jamil wants to add the DST
FA Cup to his growing list of major honours during a press conference
for the DST Sumbangsih Cup between Indera SC and MS ABDB at the NFABD
House yesterday.
The DST FA Cup is the only notable silverware missing from their
cabinet after winning back-to-back DST Super League titles in 2013 and
2014 as well as the DST Sumbangsih Cup last year.
Indera will face the current holders of both trophies MS ABDB in
tonight’s contest at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah
National Sports Complex at 8.15pm.
MS ABDB team manager Major (A) Razanol Hardi Abd Razak admitted that
they will not be coming into the match 100 percent with a number of
their players still recovering from their success last year.
“For MS ABDB our training methods and programmes so far that we’ve
employed last year, it worked for us last year. We are maintaining the
status quo however last year it took our toll.”
“We are not going to be up to 100 percent yet for tomorrow’s match,” said the team manager.
Indera has begun training at the end of January this year and they
have stepped up their preparations with evening training sessions.

They have lost one of their key players Nur Ikhwan Othman who has
joined DPMM FC though the club is starting life without the influential
forward with three or four replacements.
Haji Omar said that retaining the DST Sumbangsih Cup title they’ve
won against the same opponents will be a difficult job though they will
do their best to challenge MS ABDB.
The Indera head coach rates a 50-50 chance against the army personnel in the season’s traditional curtain raiser.
“Indera SC have added new players who have previously represented the
national team in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy in 2012 and 2014,” he
added.
Indera SC have also bolstered their attacking options with the
arrival of last season’s DST Super League top scorer Hardi Bujang in the
squad, who last played for Jerudong FC.
Indera SC and MS ABDB have consistently engaged in exciting duels
over the last few seasons and Razanol is expecting a stern test against
their fierce rivals.
“We’re expecting a very tough challenge by Indera and we have played
each other a lot of times. They always surprised us in every match. To
say we are going to win is not a good thing.”
“To say we are trying to win as hard as we can is an honest answer,” the MS ABDB team manager added.
Apart from stating the obvious, two-time winners Indera SC have
listed Wijaya FC, Najip I-Team and Tabuan Muda as their main threats to
derail their title bid ahead of the new DST Super League season while
holders MS ABDB have identified newly promoted Kasuka FC as a major
force.
National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) has been
making huge strides towards enhancing the professionalism of football in
the country.
The DST Super and Premier Leagues in the 2016 season have seen an
important overhaul with the requirement of ID passes for every player in
compliance with international standards.
Each team shall be present at the match venue one hour before the
scheduled kick-off, explained Acting Competition Director Dayem Haji
Ali.
Each team before leaving their changing rooms to perform a warm-up
prior to the match must already be prepared to submit a start-up list at
least 20 minutes after arriving at the venue.
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 4 Mac – Piala Sumbangsih DST Brunei 2016 sekali
lagi mempertemukan dua pesaing utama kejuaraan Liga Super DST Brunei
Pendekatan Indera SC tetap sama iaitu setiap hari, setiap perlawanan
semasa hujan, ujarnya tanpa berselindung.
Pengurus Pasukan MS ABDB, Mejar (U) Razanol Hardi bin Abdul Razak
Korporal Awangku Mohd Safri bin Pengiran Haji Othman.
Sumbangsih DST Brunei 2016, manakala Liga Super DST Brunei 2016 pula
