Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) cemented their position at
the top of the DST Super League with a 3-0 win over Tabuan Muda
(national under-23 team) yesterday.
Azizi Ali Rahman bagged a brace while Affendy Hj Akup also found the net in the victory at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
With only five games left, the army men now have collected 36 points, eight points ahead of their closest challenger Indera Sports Club (SC).
“We have five more games left and the title is still up for any clubs to win so we are not going to be overconfident,” said MS ABDB manager Major (A) Razanol Hardi Md Razak in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
“We are going to treat every remaining matches like how we started our first game...we are going to focus on one game at a time.
“Today’s game against Tabuan Muda was a very good example of a play with the right mind and attitude. Tabuan Muda is a younger team than us and they got good younger players, but our players were more experienced,” he added.
Both teams started strongly in the first half but it was MS ABDB who were the first to create a goal scoring chance through Mohd Mazazizi Mazlan, whose shot was tipped over the bar by Tabuan Muda goalkeeper Haime Nyaring.
Tabuan Muda responded a couple of minutes later when Mohd Nadzri Hj Irwan and captain Mohd Shafie Mohd Effendy linked up well in the midfield to set Muhd Haziq Saufee Hj Asli free on the right flank but the latter’s shot went straight into MS ABDB goalkeeper Mohd Tarmizi Hj Mat Johari.
MS ABDB eventually broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when centre back Affendy Hj Akup was left unmarked to head home Adey Shariduan Johari's free kick from the left.
Tabuan Muda could not find way past MS ABDB defence and they resorted to shoot from distance.
Mohd Khairil Shahme Suhaimi, Muhd Haziq Saufee and Muhd Nur Syazwan Halidi all tried their luck shooting from outside the penalty box but they were denied every time by goalkeeper Mohd Tarmizi.
The second half started with Tabuan Muda pressing forward searching for an equaliser but MS ABDB would put their men in the midfield to intercept any passes into their own half.
MS ABDB brought in Azizi at the half hour mark to find the second goal.
The striker nearly scored when his shot from the edge of the penalty box went just wide.
Azizi missed another glorious chance to double MS ABDB lead when he was picked unmarked by Aliuddin Hj Besar at the left post but the striker once again could not find the target.
Azizi however would not miss the third chance slotting the ball home past goalkeeper Haime after being set through inside the penalty box in the 78th minute.
Tabuan Muda were throwing their players forward to look for goals in the final 10 minutes but it was MS ABDB who found the net in the 89th minute through Azizi following a counter attack.
