THE
National Under-23 Youth team, Tabuan Muda, scored an emphatic 5-2
victory over bottom dweller Kilanas FC in a DST Super League match at
the Berakas Sports Complex yesterday.
The win helped Tabuan retain their fourth place in the table with 20 points, four points behind Najip I-Team who edged past Lun Bawang 2-1 in a close match at the Balapan Track and Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.
Tabuan started off strongly in the beginning of the first half and broke the deadlock just four minutes into the game.
Md Nur Syazwan Halidi scored his first goal of the day from a counter-attack, chipped against the Kilanas’ goalkeeper Mohd Hasdattul Anirull Rizam Hassan.
The early goal from the young squad did not deter Kilanas and surely enough a swift counter from Kilanas’ Mohd Nor Hidayatullah Hj Zaini shot the ball at the side of the goal making it 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
The equaliser did not last long for the struggling Kilanas team, as Tabuan’s Md Nur Syazwan bagged his second goal of the day two minutes after, confirming that the team’s goal attempts were effective making it 2-1.
The two conceding goals did not falter Kilanas’ spirit and they remained defensive towards the end of the first half.
The second half saw a ruthless form from the young wasps, as Mohd Asnawi Syazni Abd Aziz scored in the 53rd minute after an assist from Md Nur Syazwan.
Tabuan’s Muhd Haziq Suafee Hj Asli showed no mercy and took the opportunity after a defence error from Kilanas in the 75th minute making it 4-1.
However, Kilanas’ poor form was confirmed after Muhd Nur Syazwan scored a hattrick in the final minute of the second half, sealing three points for the young national team.
Kilanas nonetheless pushed for a last minute consolation goal, and was granted a penalty after a bad challenge from Tabuan’s Ak Muhd Shobri Pg Ibrahim in the last minute of the game.
Kilanas’ Muhd Syafiq Hj Muhd Hisham took the penalty with ease just before the whistle was blown with the final score of 5-2.
In a post match interview with The Brunei Times, Tabuan Muda’s Head coach, Stephen Ng Heng Seng said that the win gave good momentum for his young team though he was not happy in the first half before changing his tactics in the second half.
“It was a good game today, but I wasn’t happy with the performance in the first half. We put in three new young players as what we tend to do in our games.
“It was a risk, but after we reassessed our tactics for the second half and surely enough, we saw more goals,” he said.
The coach also remains focused on the recruitment and development of his team, but now looks forward for the DST FA Cup.
“We have seven games to go, but we will focus on recruiting more youngsters and developing them. The DST FA Cup is coming and we are looking forward to that,” the coach said.
“More competitions means more exposure for them and that is our objective,” he concluded.
The DST Super League continues tonight at 8.15pm with Wijaya FC taking on IKLS FC at the Berakas Sports Complex.
