THE
Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) secured a solid 2-0
DST Super League win over third-placed Najip I-Team at the Balapan Track
and Field, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas last
night. The army men are now eight points clear on top with 33 points from two-time defending champions Indera Sports Club while Najip remained third with 24 points.
Both teams started off strongly in the offence but MS ABDB’s Pvt Razimie Ramli broke the deadlock just after four minutes of the first half. It was a cross from the first corner of the night by Sergeant Mohammad Haizul Rani Metussin before Razimie headed the ball into the net.
Najip remained vigilant denying chances for the army men. However, in the 16th minute, a careless challenge from Najip’s youngest player Mohd Faiz Fakhrur Razi Muhd Rasyid against MS ABDB’s Pvt Abdul Azizi Ali Rahman inside the box awarded them a penalty.
MS ABDB’s Pvt (U) Mohd Mazazizi Mazlan bagged the second goal with ease.
The 2-0 lead for MS ABDB did not deter Najip, as they kept their composure towards the end of the first half denying the army men chance to score more goals.
The second half saw both teams in a more intense physical match, where a rain of fouls fell for both teams. Najip pushed for a consolation goal and they came close before MS ABDB’s goalkeeper and captain Pvt Mohd Tarmizi Hj Mat Johari denied them in the 73rd minute.
The army men pushed for more goals, but Najip’s goalkeeper Fardillah Hj Md Ali made some good saves, denying them towards the end of the second half.
MS ABDB’s interim manager, Major (A) Razanol Hardi Abd Razak was relieved for the win, and applauded Najip for giving them a challenging match last night.
“We got lucky, Najip was a very tough team to beat tonight. They challenged us especially in the first half. Securing three points is the main goal here but we need to really focus now,” he said in a post-match interview with The Brunei Times.
Major Razanol insisted that he is just carrying the team that was already built by Major (A) Pg Md Farisan Pg Hj Metassan, MS ABDB’s manager, who is currently being outstation to work in Mindanao for a year.
“Major Pg Farisan gave me a fantastic team to manage, so I will do my best to bring glory for the team. I cannot say for sure what will happen in this campaign since it’s only the second game for me, but we will remain focus and treat all remaining games very important,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Indera SC’s manager, Rosdin Hj Abdul Aziz was left disappointed following the cancellation of their DST Super League match against bottom- placed team Kilanas FC last night.
Indera was scheduled to play Kilanas at the Berakas Sports Complex. “We were told the match will be cancelled today around 12 noon. I was disappointed but I thank NFABD (National Football Association Brunei Darussalam) for telling us as early as possible,” Rosdin said.
“The cancellation is affecting our momentum, because our players have been training very hard for tonight’s match, and I wish the organisers have a back-up venue for when incidents such as this one happens,” he added.
