DEFENDING
champions Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) are
through to the semi-finals of the DST FA Cup after thrashing Kilanas FC
4-0 last night.
“I am very happy with how we played tonight. It was a very beautiful football to watch and Kilanas were very determined to give us a good game,” said MS ABDB manager Major Pg Farisan Pg Metassan in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.
“We are now in the semi-finals and it is good for us as we are looking to defend the title. But football can be quite unpredictable, and moreover, good teams like Indera Sports Club, QAF FC and MS PDB (Royal Brunei Police Forces Sports Council) are still in the tournament,” he added.
MS ABDB were crowned the champions in the previous edition of the tournament in 2012 beating Indera 1-0 in the final.
“All I can say right now is that we need to focus on ourselves by playing good football, and I personally think we still need to improve on our finishing,” he said, going on to congratulate Adey Shariduan Hj Johari for scoring two goals.
Mohd Khairuddin Abdul Kadir missed a glorious chances to put MS ABDB ahead when he was set up in front of the goal by Mohd Nurikhmal Damit, only for the striker to fire his shot wide.
MS ABDB defender Affendy Hj Akup did well to get into a position for a header following a corner, but his effort went just few inches wide off the bar.
The army men continued to press for early goals with striker Adey Shariduan testing goalkeeper Hazmie Hayat Emzah from outside the penalty box, but the latter punched the ball away to safety.
The Kilanas custodian was once again called into action just a few minutes later when Mohd Khairuddin was set through inside the penalty box, but goalkeeper bravely came off his line to get onto the ball.
Kilanas centre-back Muhd Khalis brought down MS ABDB Suhaimi Hj Mohd Yussof down inside the penalty box five minutes before the half-time whistle to give MS ABDB a penalty kick.
Mohd Haizul Rani Metussin stepped up to the penalty spot and sent goalkeeper Hazmie Hayat the other way, giving the army men the lead going into the break.
The soldiers showed no sign of slowing down in the second half, with Mohd Safari Wahit smashing the bar and Affendy's header going just wide a minute later.
Kilanas were forced to sit in their own half with their only striker Mohd Nazirul Azim Hj Anuar getting more isolated upfront.
MS ABDB made a change on the hour mark, bringing in winger Mohd Mazazizi Mazlan for full-back Hj Mohd Yusof Hj Matyasin to bolster their attack.
The move paid off as the extra man in the attack allowed striker Adey Shariduan to roam freely upfront.
Unmarked, Adey Shariduan made a straight run from outside the penalty box before placing the ball home in the 62nd minute.
Adey Shariduan scored MS ABDB’s third just a few minutes later with a similar run, but this time his shot deflected off the goalkeeper before going into the net.
Kilanas were getting frustrated after not being able to penetrate MS ABDB’s fortress and string passes together, and they resorted to shooting from distance.
Mohd Nurhidayatullah Hj Zaini had their best chance of the game, with the others not even able to find the target.
Mohd Mazazizi Mazlan added MS ABDB’s fourth goal of the night in the 90th minute as they marched into the last four of the tournament with ease.
Last night’s other game saw the Liang Lumut Recreational Club Football Team.
(LLRC FT) defeat Jerudong FC 3-2 at the Berakas Sports Complex.
LLRC FT will meet Najip FC in the quarter-final at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas on Sunday.
