Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) won the DST Sumbangsih Cup
for the second time after edging Indera Sports Club (SC) 2-1 in the
traditional curtain raiser last night. The club’s best player last season, striker Azizi Ali Rahman and defender Hj Mohd Yussof Hj Mat Yassin both found the net for the defending DST Super League champions at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
“It wasn’t an easy game…we worked hard until the end to win…and I am very happy for the club to win this Cup for the second time,” said MS ABDB manager Major (A) Razanol Hardi Abd Razak in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match.
MS ABDB lifted the first Sumbangsih Cup title in 2014 defeating same opponent Indera with a 2-1 score line.
“I am very proud of my players, they managed to control their temper throughout the match and keep their calm…we know a match against Indera is always going to be intense, but I think my players handled it pretty well,” he added.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw both sides were out of sync in their attempt to find the net with some missed shots and sloppy passes.
Indera managed to string some good passes together and slowly winning the battle in midfield with their one-two passes and ability to spread the play wide.
Meanwhile, the army men were resorting to long ball play and shooting from distance.
They nearly scored when their captain Ak Safri Pg Othman blasted from 20 metres out, but Indera’s goalkeeper Mohd Ahsanuddin Hj Mohd Dani kept the ball out with an acrobatic save.
Azizi showed his goal-scoring prowess for the MS ABDB when he fired a right footer into the bottom right corner to put his team ahead in the 31st minute.
Indera responded when Mohd Nur Ikhmal Damit was set free in the penalty box by Asri Hj Aspar, but the midfielder’s weak shot went straight into the arms of MS ABDB goalkeeper Mohd Tarmizi Hj Mat Johari.
The second-half saw Indera got off to a strong start with a beautiful play by Muiz Sisa and Asri at the left flank.
The duo set Hamizan Aziz Sulaiman unmarked at the edge of the penalty box.
The striker unleashed a powerful shot, but goalkeeper Mohd Tarmizi made a spectacular finger-tip save to keep his team in lead.
Indera new player Hardi Bujang settled well in the team displaying calm and composed play throughout the game alongside Shahrin Hj Momin.
But the team lacked the flare in the attack with striker Mohd Hamizan Abdul Aziz Sulaiman their only forward.
Azizi was taken off with a suspected injury midway in the second-half and was replaced by Razimie Ramli.
Razimi made an immediate impact just a few minutes later beating Indera’s offside trap to latch onto a long ball from the midfield, but the striker was brought down by Mohd Ahsanuddin with a dangerous two footed tackle at the edge of the penalty box.
The goalkeeper was sent off for the challenge and replaced by Ak Omar Nuraqamaddin Pg Salehuddin.
Hj Mohd Yussof would convert the ensuing free-kick to double MS ABDB lead in the 73rd minute.
Asri scored a consolation in the 89th minute, but MS ABDB would defend their one goal lead until the final whistle.
Present as the guest of honour last night was Hj Amer Iskandar Pehin Dato Hj Zakaria, the Assistant General Manager (Business Division) of DST.
