DEFENDING
champions the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) kicked
off their DST Super League campaign with a 2-0 victory against Wijaya
FC yesterday.
Goals by L/Cpl Mohd Baharin Hamidon and Pvt Affendy Hj Akup in the first half sealed the much needed three points for the army men at the Berakas Sports Complex.
L/Cpl Mohd Baharin broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after he past through the defence line before his shot eased through Wijaya’s goalkeeper, Mohd Azree Rahim.
The army men gained momentum after their first goal, however Wijaya maintained their composure denying the newly-crowned champions.
In the 29th minute, Wijaya’s best chance of the match was taken by Ak Anaqi Sufi Pg Omar Baki when he passed through the army men’s defenders, however his effort bear no fruit after MS ABDB’s goalkeeper Pvt Mohd Tarmizi Hj Mat Johari stretched to save his shot.
Despite trailing 1-0, Wijaya pushed hard and put up a string of good passes though failed to find its way into the army men's net.
The army men doubled their advantage in the 39th minute after Pvt Affendy Hj Akup maintained his ball control passing through Wijaya’s defenders. Mohd Azree stood no chance to save the goal and conceded once again against MS ABDB.
Second half saw Wijaya’s stronger defence as well as a more confident upfront attackers. Wijaya could have pulled one back in the 74th minute, but Pvt Mohd Tarmizi stayed strong denying the goal-hungry youngster, Suhaimi Anak Sulau.
It was Wijaya’s game altogether in the second half however they wasted several chances that could have hold back MS ABDB.
MS ABDB manager Major (A) Razanol Hardi Abd Razak was delighted with the win however admits that the league title will be tough to defend this year.
“Wijaya played fantastic and that was a clear message to us that every team will be looking to dethrone us,” said Major Razanol in an interview with The Brunei Times after the win.
“Winning the title was hard, but defending the title will be much harder.
“We saw how well Indera Sports Club (SC) did last night (Saturday night) after winning 7-0 against Jerudong FC - who were a good solid team too and of course we will be nervous.
“However, we will do our best to defend the title. Our strategy is to maintain that momentum until the end of the season.
“Winning the title is like a marathon, not a sprint. Making sure our players are balanced in fitness and stamina is very crucial.
“We secured three points today (yesterday) and that’s what matters the most at the moment,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Najip I-Team sent a painful message to the newly-promoted Kasuka FC after beating them 5-0 at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas while the Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) scrapped a 1-0 win against Lun Bawang at the Batu Apoi Sport Complex in Temburong.
