LIANG Lumut Recreational Club Football team (LLRC FT) edged Royal
Brunei Police Forces Sports Council (MS PDB) 3-2 in the DST Super League
at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports
Complex in Berakas last night.
Midfielders Safuan Juhar, Mohammad Shah Hafiz Kifli and Ak Mohd Azrul Ariffin Pg Metussin all got their names on the scoresheet in the five-goal-thriller.
The win sees LLRC replace QAF FC in fifth with 12 points, three points behind leaders Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB).
"Both team had their moments in the game (and) it was a very interesting game," said LLRC manager Hj Affendi Hj Julaihi.
"MS PDB played very well in the second-half, but we managed to hold on to the lead until the final whistle. We started the game very well in the first-half and added another one just after the break. We made some changes in the game by bringing on more midfielders into the team. We were planning to defend the 2-0 lead and just counter-attack when there are opportunities. But the policemen (MS PDB) slowly got back into the game and made us work very hard tonight. They keep pressing forward and caused our defenders to panic.
"But we managed to compose ourselves and defend the one-goal lead. It was after all a very valuable three points for us and I think all players work very hard in the game. Our centre-back Hj Saiful Nairul Azli Hj Hassan was brilliant in the game, he was our best player tonight," he added.
MS PDB went ahead after 16 minutes when Ak Mohd Azrul Ariffin took a touch and fired a shot into the net following a great through ball from midfield.
The lead was almost doubled five minutes later when Mohd Helmi Mohd Noorazmi sprung the offside trap but his low shot was parried away by MS PDB goalkeeper Mohd Khairul Amin Hj Zainuddin.
The second half saw MS PDB come out in determined fashion and they came close to scoring a minute after the break when captain Rosmini Hj Abdul Kahar's shot was brilliantly parried away by LLRC goal keeper Mohd Fakhrul Amin Sanif.
The LLRC goalkeeper pulled off another fantastic save from Mohammad Huzairol Mohd Idris whose shot was heading towards the bottom-left corner seconds later.
But it was LLRC who next found the net when referee Mohd Hadimin Hj Shahbudin awarded a penalty a minute later and midfielder Safuan calmly converted.
MS PDB went all-out in search of goals but LLRC were able to keep a tight hold of midfield to deny them opportunities.
MS PDB pulled one back in the 69th minute when LLRC's defense was unable to clear a cross which fell to an unmarked Khalid Mustapah who was given a plenty of space to fire a shot into the net. But LLRC regain their two-goal cushion four minutes later when substitute Mohd Shah Hafiz scored from outside the penalty box. Rosmini pulled one back for the policemen in injury time, but it was too late as LLRC walked away with three points.
