THE
Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) were held to a
goalless draw by Wijaya FC in the DST Super League last night at the
Berakas Sports Complex.
MS ABDB were the better team of the two, dominating throughout the 90 minutes but failed to convert a number of chances in the game.
MS ABDB manager Major (A) Pg Muhd Mufid Pg Hj Umar Ariffin was disappointed with the result but applauded the team’s effort throughout the game.
“It was a bit disappointing to drop two points tonight, but my players tried their best in the game and we were very unlucky to not convert any of the chances,” said the manager in an interview with The Brunei Times after the match.
“Wijaya defended very well tonight… we managed to create a lot of chances but we still need to work on our finishing,”
“There are still eight games left for us in the competition and anything can happen in football,” said the manager when asked about their chances of winning the league this season.
MS ABDB remained second in the 10-team league table, seven points behind leaders Indera Sports Club.
Wijaya are sixth in the table with 13 points.
MS ABDB kicked off the match on the right foot in the first half.
Mohammad Mazazizi Mazlan was the first to test Wijaya's defence with a beautiful run into the penalty box but the 23-year-old would fire his shot just wide.
Abdul Azizi Ali Rahman came close to scoring a few minutes later when he was picked out by Suhaimi Hj Mohd Yussof at the edge of the penalty area.
The winger's first touch was brilliant but he would squander the opportunity horribly by sending the ball over the bar.
Mohammad Mazazizi would test Wijaya's defence once again at the hour mark but Wijaya goalkeeper Mohd Nashruddin@Muizzaddien Selamat would come up with an acrobatic save.
Ak Anaqi Sufi Pg Hj Omar Baqi’s effort from outside the penalty box was Wijaya's only real chance throughout the game as the army's defence – led by centre-back Affendy Hj Akup – quelled any danger.
Abdul Azizi had plenty of chances to put his team ahead but he failed to find the back of the net.
This included missing a penalty in the 60th minute.
MS ABDB upped their tempo in the final twenty minutes of the second-half with Mohammad Mazazizi pushing up front to assist in the attack, but it wasn’t enough to get them the elusive goal.
The other match at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas saw Najip FC were held to a 1-1 draw by QAF FC.
